Lunga Point

Lunga Point is a headland on the northern coast of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, noted for its strategic role during the World War II Guadalcanal campaign. The area became a focal point for military operations because of its coastal position and proximity to airfield facilities.

The shoreline and nearby terrain were used for troop landings, defensive positions and naval engagements during 1942 and 1943; battlefield remains and memorials in the Guadalcanal area draw visitors interested in wartime history. The point’s coastal access and beaches also figure in historical accounts of the campaign.

During the 1942-43 campaign the area around Lunga Point saw intense fighting as Allied forces sought to secure Henderson Field and establish control of the island; naval battles and land operations in nearby waters and beaches were part of the larger Pacific conflict.

Lunga Point sits on the north coast of Guadalcanal, close to the Lunga River mouth and the site of Henderson Field, and is accessible from Honiara by road along the island’s northern shore.
