Luna Park Sydney
Park Historic Sydney amusement park on Harbour foreshore
Historic amusement park at Milsons Point beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Luna Park offers classic rides, a Ferris wheel and waterfront photo opportunities since 1935.
Luna Park Sydney is a historic amusement park at Milsons Point on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour, first opened in 1935. It is one of Sydney’s best-known entertainment sites and is immediately adjacent to the northern approach of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The park contains a compact seaside amusement layout with a mix of heritage and modern rides. Highlights include the large smiling face entrance and a heritage-listed wooden roller coaster, the Scenic Railway, which dates to the park’s original 1935 installation and remains a central feature. The harbour-side position gives direct views across the water to the city and the Opera House from parts of the park.
Other attractions include a Ferris wheel, a funhouse area historically known as Coney Island, and a cluster of flat rides and arcades clustered along the waterfront. The park footprint is small compared with modern theme parks, so most attractions are within a few hundred metres of the entrance and harbour promenade.
Luna Park was built and opened in 1935 as a commercial amusement park; its layout and many attractions have been altered, rebuilt or refurbished several times since then. The Scenic Railway and the face entrance are survivors of the earliest era and the site has been subject to heritage assessments and restoration work in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The park sits at Milsons Point in the North Sydney local area, directly on Sydney Harbour and within easy walking distance of central Sydney across the Harbour Bridge. It is a short walk from Milsons Point railway and ferry services and about 2 kilometres by road from the Sydney central business district.
