Lumen Field
Stadium Seattle stadium hosting NFL's Seahawks and MLS's Sounders
Seattle’s downtown stadium, Lumen Field, hosts Seahawks and Sounders matches, concerts and major events. Fans come for live sports, tailgating, and quick access to the city’s waterfront and Pike Place Market.
Lumen Field is a multi-use stadium in Seattle’s SoDo neighbourhood, opened in 2002 and used primarily by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and MLS’s Seattle Sounders FC. The facility is known for a steep seating bowl and a partial roof canopy that together create an intense game-day atmosphere.
Seating capacity is roughly 68,000 for football and varies with configuration for soccer and concerts. The stadium’s design intentionally brings spectators close to the field and the canopy helps trap and reflect crowd noise, contributing to its reputation as one of the loudest venues in professional sports.
Built to replace older facilities and to provide a modern, soccer-and-football-capable venue, the stadium includes premium suites, club levels and broadcast facilities. It sits within walking distance of downtown Seattle and is linked to the city’s Link light rail and bus network for event access.
The stadium occupies a site in the SoDo district, south of downtown Seattle, adjacent to freight and light-industrial areas and close to the city’s waterfront and Pioneer Square neighbourhood. Public transit and pedestrian routes are the most common means of access on event days.
- Primary teams and capacity: Home to the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and MLS's Seattle Sounders FC, opened in 2002 with a bowl capacity around 68,000 for football.

What to See #
- Main bowl: The main seating bowl arranged for American football and soccer, notable for steep lower tiers that bring fans close to the playing surface and contribute to the stadium's acoustic properties.
- Roof canopy: A partial roof canopy that covers many spectator seats and helps concentrate crowd noise, a distinctive architectural element contributing to the venue's reputation for loud atmospheres.
- Transit links: Transit access via the nearby Stadium and International District/Chinatown light rail stations and bus links, making the stadium highly accessible from downtown Seattle.
How to Get to Lumen Field #
Take Sound Transit Link light rail to Stadium Station (or the nearby SODO area) and walk about 5-10 minutes to Lumen Field; several King County Metro bus routes also serve the SoDo/stadium area. From downtown Seattle the stadium is a short walk or quick bus/light-rail ride south.
By car Lumen Field sits roughly 1-2 miles south of downtown Seattle; approach via I‑5 or local streets (1st Ave S / S Royal Brougham Way) and use the stadium parking/paid lots in the SoDo neighborhood.
Tips for Visiting Lumen Field #
- Take Link Light Rail or get off at Stadium/King Street Station - it's the most direct public-transit access and avoids the heavy I‑5 and downtown congestion on event nights.
- For Seattle Sounders matches, join the pre-game march of supporters from Occidental Park to the south end; getting there early secures lively atmosphere and easier entry to the supporter sections.
- Check Lumen Field's bag/entry and re-entry policy before you go and buy tickets in advance - popular matches and concerts sell out and strict entry rules slow lines, so arriving soon after gates open reduces wait time.
- If you're trying to miss the biggest crowds, plan to leave slightly before the final whistle; exits funnel into the same light-rail platform and trains are busiest immediately after events.
Best Time to Visit Lumen Field #
Go for home games during the NFL season for atmosphere, or in summer for concerts and drier weather.
