Luing
Island Scottish island noted for slate quarries and beaches
Off Scotland’s west coast in the Slate Islands, Luing draws walkers and sea‑kayakers; visits revolve around rocky shorelines, crofting settlements and ferry links to the mainland.
Luing is an island off the west coast of Scotland in Argyll and Bute, one of the group often referred to as the Slate Islands. It has a history of small-scale slate quarrying and crofting agriculture.
The island offers coastal scenery and traces of its quarrying past, including worked rock faces and abandoned industrial sites. Rural settlement is dispersed and the island is primarily visited for walking, birdlife and coastal views.
Slate quarrying was an important local industry from the 18th century into the 20th century, shaping settlement and transport links. Over time the population declined as quarrying reduced and economic patterns changed.
Situated off Scotland’s west coast in the region of Argyll, Luing lies among other small islands and skerries in the Firth of Lorn and is part of the wider Inner Hebrides maritime landscape.
- Geography and industry: Part of the small island group off the west coast of Scotland historically associated with slate quarrying and island agriculture.
- Local legacy: The island lends its name to a native breed of beef cattle developed there, known for hardiness in Atlantic conditions.
