Ludlow Castle
Castle Medieval English castle with Norman and later ruins
Perched above the River Teme, Ludlow Castle’s ruins overlook a market town known for food festivals; visitors tour the medieval walls, historic interiors and explore nearby Shropshire countryside.
Ludlow Castle is a medieval ruin in the market town of Ludlow in Shropshire, England, founded in the late 11th or early 12th century. It developed into an important regional stronghold and administrative centre in the Welsh Marches.
Over several centuries the castle was expanded with stone curtain walls, towers and domestic buildings and later served as the seat of the Council of Wales and the Marches in the late medieval and Tudor periods. It fell into decline after the 17th century and much of the structure is now a managed ruin open to visitors.
The site provides examples of Norman and later medieval masonry and offers views over the River Teme and the town. Ludlow town grew beside the castle and maintains a well-preserved historic centre that is often visited together with the castle.
Geographically the castle sits on a promontory above the River Teme in south Shropshire, adjacent to Ludlow’s main streets and easily reached from regional road links to Shrewsbury and Hereford.
- Location in town: The castle's riverside position in the centre of Ludlow makes it easy to combine with visits to the town's medieval streets and market precincts.
- Visitor experience: Ruins are accessible to the public and include sections of curtain wall, towers and the great hall; clear interpretation panels outline the castle's medieval and Tudor roles.
How to Get to Ludlow Castle #
Ludlow Castle sits beside the town centre of Ludlow on the A49. By rail, Ludlow station (served by Transport for Wales on the Welsh Marches line) is in the town and is about a 10-15 minute walk into the castle and castle grounds.
By road the town is served directly by the A49; nearby larger towns include Shrewsbury to the north and Hereford to the south (reach Ludlow by a roughly 30-50 km drive depending on your start point), with on-street and town-centre parking a short walk from the castle.
Tips for Visiting Ludlow Castle #
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to explore the castle before town-day visitors and market crowds arrive; the castle sits a short walk from Ludlow station, making an early train arrival practical.
- Check opening hours and any special events on the castle's official pages before you go - seasonal hours and guided-tour times change, and some interior areas are closed for conservation or private events.
- Combine the castle visit with a short walk through the medieval town centre and planned parking near the town centre rather than attempting to park directly adjacent to the castle on busy market days.
