Læsø is a Danish island in the Kattegat Sea, part of the North Jutland Region, known for its coastal dunes, beaches and unique local building traditions. The island has a small population and a landscape dominated by sandy coasts, heath and pine plantations.
A distinctive feature is the traditional seaweed-thatched roofs found on older cottages, a technique linked to the island’s historic salt-production industry. Visitors also come for long beaches, birdlife and small local museums that interpret the island’s maritime and saltmaking past.
Læsø developed a local sea-salt industry in earlier centuries that influenced settlement and building methods on the island. More recently the island has focused on tourism, conservation and small-scale fishing and agriculture.
The island lies in the Kattegat between the Danish mainland and Sweden; the main ferry link is from Frederikshavn on the Jutland coast. The two principal settlements, Vesterø and Østerby, concentrate services, the ferry terminal and accommodation.
