Lower Town is a historic, centrally located neighbourhood in Ottawa immediately east of the city’s core that includes residential streets, small commercial blocks and parts of the ByWard Market. It is one of Ottawa’s oldest residential districts and retains a mix of 19th-century buildings and newer infill.
The area contains a compact commercial strip and the market area that attract shoppers, restaurants and nightlife, while side streets remain largely residential. The neighbourhood is known for a close-knit urban fabric and walkable streets.
Lower Town grew up in the 19th century as part of early Ottawa settlement and has retained many older buildings while accommodating modern commercial uses in the market district. The neighbourhood has long been home to immigrant communities and small businesses.
