Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park
National Park Protected Wadden Sea area in Lower Saxony, tidal flats
Tidal flats and Wadden Sea habitat on Germany’s North Sea coast, part of the World Heritage area. Visitors join guided mudflat walks, seal‑watching boat trips and birdwatching along islands and salt marshes.
Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park protects a stretch of tidal flats, salt marshes and offshore islands along the Lower Saxony coast of northwestern Germany. It forms a marine and coastal reserve central to the Wadden Sea ecosystem of the southeastern North Sea.
Visitors can explore mudflat shores, guided tidal-flat walks and island beaches; the park is a major staging area for migratory birds and supports breeding and haul-out sites for seals. Boat services and island ferries connect mainland harbours to the East Frisian Islands located within the protected area.
Coastal and marine conservation measures established the park to protect the Wadden Sea’s dynamic intertidal habitats and the species that depend on them; the wider Wadden Sea area has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its natural values. Management combines nature protection with regulated visitor access and traditional coastal uses.
The park runs along the Lower Saxony coast of Germany in the southeastern portion of the North Sea and includes mainland tidal flats and a chain of East Frisian Islands.
- UNESCO Wadden Sea: Part of the larger Wadden Sea ecosystem recognised by UNESCO for its tidal flats, the park protects intertidal habitats that are vital for migratory birds and seals.
What to See #
- East Frisian Islands: Several East Frisian Islands fall within the park's seaward boundary, including Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge, each with beaches and dune systems.
