Lovön
Island Island housing royal Drottningholm Palace estate
An island in Lake Mälaren, Lovön hosts Drottningholm Palace and its baroque gardens; tourists come for the palace (UNESCO), boating from Stockholm and historic 18th‑century architecture.
Lovön is an island in Lake Mälaren in Ekerö Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden, best known as the site of Drottningholm Palace. The palace complex on the island is the private residence of the Swedish royal family and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The palace and its extensive gardens occupy a central position on the island and include formal parkland, walkways and several architecturally significant buildings. Visitors commonly tour the palace state rooms, visit the 18th-century Chinese pavilion and attend performances at the historic court theatre.
The grounds include formal English- and French-style gardens and a lakeside setting that provide viewing points across Lake Mälaren. Seasonal boat connections from Stockholm offer a scenic approach to the island as an alternative to road travel.
The present palace complex dates mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries and was developed as a royal residence over successive reigns. The theatre and Chinese pavilion are 18th-century additions that reflect the period’s artistic fashions and court life.
Lovön sits in Lake Mälaren about 10 km west of central Stockholm, within the suburban-archipelago landscape of Ekerö Municipality. The island is surrounded by the lake’s sheltered waterways and parkland.
- UNESCO status: The palace complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 for its well-preserved royal architecture and landscape.
- Access: Accessible from central Stockholm by road and by seasonal boat services from the city centre, with year-round public transport connections to the island.
What to See #
- Drottningholm Palace: The principal royal residence on the island, set within formal gardens and parkland and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ensemble of palace, theatre and pavilion.
- Court theatre: An 18th-century court theatre preserved with original stage machinery and occasional live performances; it is one of the few working historic theatres of its type in Europe.
- Chinese Pavilion: An 18th-century Chinese-style pavilion and accompanying gardens located in the palace grounds, notable for its decorative interiors and garden architecture.
How to Get to Lovön #
Lovön is the island west of central Stockholm in Ekerö Municipality (home to Drottningholm Palace). By car it is reached via Drottningholmsvägen from central Stockholm - roughly 10-12 km and about a 20-30 minute drive depending on traffic.
Public transport: seasonal passenger boats run from central Stockholm (Stadshuskajen/City Hall) to Drottningholm in summer; year-round you can take SL buses out toward Ekerö and get off near Drottningholm (the local bus stop for the palace is a short 5-15 minute walk from the moors/entrance).
Tips for Visiting Lovön #
- Approach Lovön via the summer boat from central Stockholm when available-the waterside landing at Drottningholm gives a scenic, less-congested arrival and avoids parking at the palace.
- If you plan to tour the palace interiors or the 18th-century Drottningholm Palace Theatre, book timed tickets in advance and allow time for separate entry to the Chinese Pavilion, which often has its own access arrangements.
- Use public transport (SL buses serve Brommaplan with onward connections) or the summer ferry rather than driving at peak season to avoid limited parking and large coach crowds around the palace grounds.
Best Time to Visit Lovön #
Best visited in summer (June-August) for pleasant weather and long daylight, with spring and early autumn offering fewer crowds.
