Lough Leane is the largest of the three Lakes of Killarney located in County Kerry, Ireland. It lies within Killarney National Park and sits immediately west of the town of Killarney.
The lake is visited for its scenic boat trips and shoreline sights, notably the island monastic site of Innisfallen and lakeside historic structures such as Ross Castle. The island contains ruins of a monastery commonly dated to the early medieval period (around the 7th century).
The monastic ruins on Innisfallen date to the early medieval era and the lake has long been integral to local transport and settlement patterns in the Killarney area. Over subsequent centuries the shoreline has developed with houses, castles and parkland that form today’s visitor routes.
Situated directly beside Killarney town in southwest County Kerry, the lake is a central feature of the Killarney lake system and provides access to walking trails, boat services and points of interest across the national park.
