Lough Gur
Lake Neolithic lake with archaeological sites and trails
Lough Gur’s lakeshore in County Limerick sits amid Neolithic and megalithic sites; visitors arrive for archaeology, standing stones, walking trails and waterside birdlife.
Lough Gur is a lake and surrounding archaeological landscape in County Limerick, Munster, known for a high concentration of prehistoric and medieval monuments. The site preserves evidence of human activity spanning several thousand years.
The area includes stone circles, burial mounds, ringforts and habitation sites distributed around the lake, with walking trails that allow close access to many monuments. A small heritage centre provides exhibits and interpretation and serves as the main starting point for exploring the site.
People have occupied and ritualised the Lough Gur area from at least the Neolithic period, with later Bronze Age and medieval activity adding layers of monuments and settlement. Archaeological work over the 20th and 21st centuries has documented the site’s long sequence of use.
Situated in south County Limerick, the lake lies roughly 15-20 km south of Limerick city in a pastoral landscape of low hills and farmland. Roads from Limerick and nearby towns provide access to the heritage centre and trails.
- Time depth: The site contains monuments from the Neolithic through the medieval period, making it one of Ireland's important multi-period archaeological landscapes.
- Visitor orientation: The heritage centre provides the main interpretation and is a useful first stop to plan walks and see finds recovered from the area.

Tips for Visiting Lough Gur #
- Aim to arrive at the Lough Gur Visitor Centre (seasonal opening) first thing in the morning to pick up maps and join any scheduled guided walks-that frees you to explore the lakeshore monuments before other day-trippers arrive.
- Follow the short marked archaeological trails around the lake rather than just viewing sites from the road; the Visitor Centre can point you to the best sequences of ringforts, fulacht fiadh and standing stones for a compact half-day circuit.
- Check the Visitor Centre's opening times before you travel-several important sites and information boards are only accessible when the centre is staffed, so planning around its hours makes your visit far more informative.
