Lough Erne
Lake Complex lake system with numerous islands and waterways
A paired lake system in County Fermanagh-Upper and Lower Lough Erne-scattered with islands; popular for boating, angling, historic island monasteries and castle ruins.
Lough Erne is a freshwater lake system in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland, comprising connected Upper and Lower loughs linked by the River Erne. The waterways are dotted with numerous islands and rich archaeological and historic sites.
Monastic ruins and a round tower on Devenish Island, carved stone figures on Boa Island, and lakeside estates such as Crom Castle that provide shoreline walks and viewpoints. The loughs are used for boating, angling and shoreline recreation.
Settlement and ecclesiastical activity around the loughs date back to the early medieval period, with major monastic foundations on several islands. Over later centuries the area developed estates and small towns that used the waterways for transport and fishing.
The lakes lie in inland County Fermanagh; the town of Enniskillen sits between the Upper and Lower loughs and serves as the main gateway for visitors exploring the islands and shoreline.
- Upper and Lower Lough Erne: The lake system is split into Upper and Lower sections linked by the River Erne; the town of Enniskillen sits between the two and is the main visitor service centre.
What to See #
- Devenish Island: An island with an early medieval monastic site and a well-preserved round tower; the site contains carved cross-slabs and remains associated with a cenobitic monastery.
- Boa Island: A lake island noted for its carved stone figures and early Christian sculptures, located in Lower Lough Erne and attracting visitors for its carved stones and cemetery remains.
- Crom Estate: A riverside estate and castle grounds on the lough shore offering historic house and woodland walks beside the water.
How to Get to Lough Erne #
Lough Erne (Upper and Lower) is most commonly accessed from Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, which sits between the two main basins and provides marinas, boat launches and visitor facilities. From Enniskillen town centre the lough shore and boating facilities are a short walk or a few minutes’ drive.
By road Enniskillen is the usual base for visiting Lough Erne; it is reachable by car from Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland (expect a drive of roughly 1.5-2 hours from Belfast depending on route and traffic). Regional bus services link Enniskillen with other towns in the area.
Tips for Visiting Lough Erne #
- Use Enniskillen as your base and aim for early departures - calm mornings give the best light and easier navigation between islands, and boat operators often start trips from here.
- Make time for Devenish Island's monastic site (boat access required) - it's one of the lough's most significant historic attractions and is frequently missed by visitors who only drive the shoreline.
- To avoid weekend and holiday crowds, book island or guided boat trips on weekdays or in the shoulder seasons; marinas and visitor facilities in smaller villages are quieter outside peak summer weeks.
Best Time to Visit Lough Erne #
The best time to visit Lough Erne in Northern Ireland is late spring through early autumn for the mildest conditions and best access to outdoor activities.
