Lough Derg, on the River Shannon, is one of Ireland’s larger lakes and a prominent inland waterway in the central-west region. The lake forms a long, irregular basin on the Shannon and is used extensively for boating, angling and lakeside recreation.

Shoreline attractions include marinas, sailing clubs and small towns such as Portumna at the northern end and Killaloe at the southern end, which provide services, historic sites and boat access. Visitors use the lake for day cruises, sailing and fishing; islands and peninsulas hold early Christian and medieval ruins, with Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) the most noted monastic site accessible by boat.

The lake has been an important navigation route on the Shannon for centuries and local settlements developed at its head and tail to serve river traffic. Over time the lake’s shores have seen development for recreation, conservation and local agriculture.

Geographically Lough Derg lies on the River Shannon in west-central Ireland, stretching between Portumna in the north and Killaloe in the south; the surrounding landscape is a mix of low hills, farmland and wooded shoreline.

  • Boating season: Several marinas and sailing clubs around the lake provide boat hire and moorings, with peak activity during late spring to early autumn.
  • Fishing: The lake supports coarse and game fishing including pike and trout; local angling regulations and permits apply.

What to See #

  • Portumna: Portumna at the northern end of the lake with a historic castle and marina that mark the lake's inlet from the River Shannon.
  • Killaloe-Ballina: The twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina at the southern end of the lake, linked by a historic bridge and serving as a major boating gateway.
  • Dromineer: A small village with a sailing club and marina popular for recreational sailing and lakeside walks.
  • Inis Cealtra (Holy Island): An island with early Christian ruins including a round tower and monastic remains, accessible by boat.
