Shoreline attractions include marinas, sailing clubs and small towns such as Portumna at the northern end and Killaloe at the southern end, which provide services, historic sites and boat access. Visitors use the lake for day cruises, sailing and fishing; islands and peninsulas hold early Christian and medieval ruins, with Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) the most noted monastic site accessible by boat.
The lake has been an important navigation route on the Shannon for centuries and local settlements developed at its head and tail to serve river traffic. Over time the lake’s shores have seen development for recreation, conservation and local agriculture.
