Lötschberg
Mountain Alpine massif known for major Lötschberg rail tunnel
The Lötschberg corridor links Bernese Oberland with Valais through tunnels and alpine passes. Travelers use the historic rail route for scenic train journeys, hiking access and gateway routes into Valais valleys.
Lötschberg refers to a mountain ridge and major Alpine transport corridor between the Bernese Oberland and the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The area is known both for its mountain pass and for important railway tunnels that cross the Alps at this point.
Rail infrastructure includes an older tunnel and mountain-line opened in the early 20th century and a more recent low-level base tunnel that provides faster, lower-gradient rail connections for passenger and freight services. The corridor is widely used for interregional rail traffic and scenic mountain journeys.
Engineering works were undertaken in phases as Swiss railways modernised Alpine crossings to increase capacity and reduce gradients. The route continues to be central to Swiss north-south rail connections and to freight transit through the Alps.
Geographically the Lötschberg ridge sits on the border zone between the Bernese Oberland and Valais, with approaches from the Rhone valley and the upper Aare/Emme regions. The transport corridor links central Swiss plains with southern alpine valleys.
- Transport importance: The Lötschberg corridor is a major north-south Alpine rail axis connecting canton Bern with Valais and forms an important freight and passenger route through the Alps.
What to See #
- Lötschberg Base Tunnel: The Lötschberg Base Tunnel, a modern rail tunnel that provides a low-gradient rail link under the Lötschberg massif and shortens travel times between Bern and Valais.
- Historic Lötschberg tunnel and pass line: The older Lötschberg tunnel and mountain pass railway line linking Bern and southern Valais, notable for historic engineering and scenic mountain approaches.
How to Get to Lötschberg #
The Lötschberg region (Lötschberg massif and rail route) is served by the BLS railway Lötschberg line: take BLS trains from Bern or Spiez toward Kandersteg or Goppenstein to access trailheads and viewpoints. Kandersteg and Goppenstein are the usual rail access points, and many mountain trails start within a short walk of the stations.
By car follow the A6/A8 road corridors from the Bern area toward the Lötschberg/Kandersteg region; Kandersteg is the common valley access point. Note that vehicle shuttle trains operate through the Lötschberg tunnel for drivers who prefer to transport cars by rail between the portals.
Tips for Visiting Lötschberg #
- Take the historic Lötschberg mountain railway (the old Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon line) rather than the base tunnel if you want the classic alpine panoramas and viewing points along the south ramp.
- Start from Kandersteg or Goppenstein and plan hikes from the mountain-line stations - short ridge walks and viewpoints just off the line offer great views without lengthy approaches, and are quieter early in the day.
- Most travellers miss the contrast between the fast base-tunnel services and the scenic mountain route: if your schedule allows, reserve a seat on the panoramic trains or break your journey to enjoy the viewpoints and small mountain villages along the route.
Best Time to Visit Lötschberg #
Visit the Lötschberg area in summer (June-September) for hiking and clear mountain views, or in winter for snow sports if prepared for cold conditions.
