A protected area in the central Andes of Colombia, Los Nevados National Natural Park conserves high-mountain ecosystems, glaciated volcanoes and páramo landscapes. The park contains several snow-capped peaks and important watersheds.

Visitors come for high-altitude trekking, technical climbs of the volcanic peaks and to observe páramo vegetation and highland lakes. Trail lengths and difficulty vary; many routes access glacial valleys and crater rims.

The park was established to protect Andean glaciers, water sources and unique high-mountain flora and fauna; management has focused on conservation of fragile páramo habitats and on regulating mountaineering access. Glacial retreat in recent decades has changed some high-altitude routes and features.

Los Nevados spans the central Cordillera and includes territory in Tolima as well as neighboring departments, lying between cities such as Manizales, Pereira and Ibague9. Access points are reached from several mountain towns depending on the chosen trail or peak.

  • Altitude and conditions: High elevations and cold conditions dominate the park; many trails require acclimatization, warm clothing and experience with mountain weather.
  • Activities: The park protects páramo ecosystems, glaciers and volcanic peaks-activities focus on trekking, mountaineering and nature observation rather than beach-style tourism.

What to See #

  • Nevado del Ruiz: Nevado del Ruiz, a glaciated stratovolcano that rises to about 5,321 meters and is one of the park's most prominent peaks.
  • Nevado del Tolima: Nevado del Tolima, a high volcanic peak reaching roughly 5,215 meters and visited by technical mountaineers and experienced trekkers.
  • Santa Isabel and páramo: Nevado Santa Isabel and surrounding páramo plateaus, which include high-altitude wetlands, endemic plants and glacial cirques.
