Loreta
Religious Site Baroque pilgrimage complex in Prague with ornate chapels
Prague’s Loreta complex contains a Baroque cloister and a Santa Casa replica with a treasury of liturgical silver; pilgrims and visitors attend choral services, view the clock show and inspect the church décor.
Loreta is a Baroque pilgrimage complex in the Hradcany quarter of Prague, built from the early 17th century as a replica of the Santa Casa and expanded through the 18th century. It is known for its cloistered courtyard, ornate church and a celebrated carillon.
The complex includes the cloister enclosing the replica of the Holy House, a Baroque church with later façade work by the Dientzenhofer family, and a treasury containing liturgical objects and reliquaries. The site is also famous for its bell chimes - a carillon of multiple bells that plays melodies several times daily from the façade tower.
Construction began in the 1620s under Prague’s Catholic patrons and continued in phases across the 17th and 18th centuries, with additions and decorative programs reflecting Baroque tastes. The Loreta functioned as a devotional centre and repository for donated liturgical treasures.
Loreta stands in the Hradcany district near Prague Castle, approximately a short walk west of the main castle complex and a couple of kilometres from Old Town Square in central Prague.
- Carillon times: A carillon of 27 bells plays a sequence of melodies several times a day; check local timetables for performances.
- Treasury note: Visit the treasury to see liturgical objects and reliquaries; photography may be restricted inside the treasury rooms.
What to See #
- Santa Casa: The Santa Casa - a cloistered replica of the Holy House dating to the early 17th century and forming the spiritual centre of the complex.
- Church and façade: Baroque church and façade largely executed in the 17th and early 18th centuries, with work by members of the Dientzenhofer family.
- Loreta Treasury: Loreta Treasury holding a collection of liturgical objects, reliquaries and donated jewels that illustrate the site's devotional history.
How to Get to Loreta #
Take Prague public transport to the Hradčany/Loreta area. The easiest is tram 22 to the Pohořelec stop (or take Metro A to Malostranská), then follow signs downhill to Loretánské náměstí - about a 5-7 minute walk from Pohořelec or a 15-20 minute uphill walk from Malostranská. By car Loreta is a short drive from Prague city centre (Wenceslas Square), roughly 3 km; there is limited parking near the Hradčany/Loretánské náměstí area.
Tips for Visiting Loreta #
- Visit early in the morning (before large tour groups arrive) and combine Loreta with a walk downhill toward Prague Castle to make the most of the Hradčany setting while avoiding peak crowds.
- Use the main entrance on Loretánské náměstí where the ticket office and visitor route begin; once inside head straight to the cloister and the small treasury-many visitors breeze past the chapel's baroque monstrance and liturgical silver.
- Allow time to explore the quieter cloister garden and upper museum rooms, which are often overlooked by people who only see the exterior and main chapel.
Best Time to Visit Loreta #
Best visited in late spring or early autumn for mild weather and fewer tourists.
