Lop Nur
Lake Former saline lake and historical nuclear test site
Lop Nur in Xinjiang occupies a dried lakebed and surrounding salt flats along old Silk Road routes; travelers explore desert tracks, archaeological mounds and stark, wide-open terrain.
Lop Nur is a former terminal lake and salt marsh basin in eastern Xinjiang, China, within the greater Tarim Basin and Taklamakan desert region. Once a large lakebed fed by rivers from surrounding ranges, much of the basin is now dry salt flats and desert landscape.
The site is archaeologically important for remains of ancient lakeside settlements and Silk Road-era ruins that occupy former shoreline locations. In modern history it became notable as the location of the Chinese nuclear test centre, used for tests between the 1960s and the 1990s.
Lop Nur lies in a remote, arid part of eastern Xinjiang and is reached via long desert tracks and limited regional roads; surrounding terrain is dominated by dunes, hardpan and salt crusts. The basin sits well inland from major Xinjiang cities and requires careful logistical planning for visits.
- Nuclear test site history: Used as the People's Republic of China's main nuclear test site from 1964 until 1996, with associated exclusion zones and historical military infrastructure in the region.
- Visiting note: Remote desert basin with shifting sands and saline ground-visits require preparation and local guidance due to difficult access and sparse services.
