Lomsdal–Visten National Park
National Park Rugged coastal national park with fjords and mountains
Along Nordland’s coast, Lomsdal-Visten National Park contains fjords, steep mountains and river valleys; hikers, kayakers and reindeer herders use its remote trails and seasonal huts.
Lomsdal-Visten National Park is a protected area in Nordland, northern Norway established in 2009 to conserve a large tract of coastal mountains and interior plateaus. It covers a remote, rugged landscape where alpine peaks meet fjord and river systems.
The park offers extensive hiking and wilderness opportunities across mountain ridges, river valleys and low coastal islands. Highlights include multi-day trekking routes, alpine lakes and areas important for wild reindeer and seasonal pastoral use. Trails are generally undeveloped and distances between shelter points can be long, so self-sufficiency is required.
Protection was put in place to conserve the area’s natural and cultural values, including traditional grazing and seasonal use by Sámi and local communities. Management aims to maintain natural processes and low-intensity pastoral activities rather than develop tourism infrastructure.
Geographically the park lies within Nordland county on Norway’s northern coast, stretching from coastal islands inland across valleys and mountain plateaus. Nearest regional towns include Brønnøysund to the west and Mosjøen to the northeast, with access primarily by road and local fjord crossings.
- Establishment date: Established in 2009 to protect a mix of coastal mountains, river valleys and plateaus; permits backcountry hiking and wild camping under Norwegian regulations.
- Visiting season: Best visited in summer (June-September) when trails are snow-free; expect minimal services and long distances between marked huts.
What to See #
- Visten valley: A long coastal valley that gives the park its name, containing river channels, low-lying wetlands and access points for hiking into the surrounding mountains.
- Lomsdal massif: The Lomsdal massif of rugged peaks and plateaus characterized by steep-sided ridges, alpine lakes and reindeer grazing areas used seasonally by Sámi and local herders.
Tips for Visiting Lomsdal–Visten National Park #
- Treat Lomsdal-Visten as a remote, largely trail-less wilderness: plan routes carefully, carry detailed topographic maps and a reliable means of navigation, and expect long approaches with river crossings and rough terrain.
- Access is commonly by long hikes or boat/sea approaches into fjord inlets - consult local outfitters or county tourist information (Nordland) for recommended landing spots and to arrange boat transfers where available.
- There are few facilities and sparse signage; register your trip plan with local authorities or mountain rescue, choose the less-used valleys outside peak July weeks to avoid the small number of other visitors, and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
