Lomnický štít
Mountain Prominent High Tatras peak with cable car access
A High Tatras summit, Lomnický štít offers cable-car access from Tatranská Lomnica and alpine routes; visitors seek summit panoramas, glacier views and mountaineering with guided climbs in summer and winter.
Lomnický štít is a prominent peak in the High Tatras of Slovakia, reaching 2,634 metres in elevation. It is one of the highest and most visited summits in the Tatras and is known for its steep, rocky profile and extensive views.
The summit area hosts an observatory and visitor vantage points, and public access is provided by a cable car from the Tatranská Lomnica valley, which takes visitors close to the top. The mountain is used for alpine climbing, guided visits and scientific observation.
Historically the peak has been an object of early mountaineering in the Tatras and development of access facilities in the 20th century; the cable car and summit installations date from the mid-20th century with later upgrades. The mountain sits within the High Tatras massif and is a short distance from the Tatra towns used as bases for mountain activity.
Geographically the peak occupies a central position in the High Tatras range in northern Slovakia, above the valley settlements of Tatranská Lomnica and within reach of the regional centre of Poprad.
- Elevation: At 2,634 metres the peak is one of the highest in the High Tatras and is a major objective for visitors to the Tatra mountains.
- Access options: Public access to the summit is typically via the mountain cable car from Tatranská Lomnica; guided climbs are available for mountaineers who wish to use the ridge routes.
What to See #
- Cable car and access: A cable car links Tatranská Lomnica to a high station below the summit, providing the common public access route to the peak and its viewing terraces.
- Summit installations: Summit facilities include a small meteorological observatory and viewing area that offer panoramic views across the High Tatras and into neighbouring valleys.

Lomnický štít is reached from the High Tatras resort of Tatranská Lomnica. From Poprad (Poprad-Tatry railway station) take the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) to Tatranská Lomnica; from the village take the cable car up to Skalnaté Pleso and then the direct cable car/ladder service to the summit area of Lomnický štít (seasonal/scheduled services).

Tips for Visiting Lomnický štít #
- Take the cable car from Tatranská Lomnica and aim for the first runs of the day - mornings usually offer the clearest visibility from the observation platforms and reduce the chance of afternoon cloud and wind closing summit access.
- Buy cable-car tickets or reserved time slots in advance during the high season; the lift has limited capacity and peak summer weekends can sell out, forcing long waits at the base station.
- Monitor mountain weather and alpine warnings before ascent - conditions on Lomnický štít change rapidly and summit access is commonly restricted in high winds or low visibility, so plan alternate lower-elevation hikes for the same day.
