Mountain Historic assembly site in Þingvellir national park

At Þingvellir National Park, Lögberg (the Law Rock) marks the medieval Althing assembly site beside rift-valley scenery; visitors combine history with hiking and tectonic landscapes.

Main image

Lögberg, often translated as the Law Rock, is the historic assembly site where the Icelandic Alþingi met from about 930 CE. It is located within Þingvellir National Park and is central to Icelandic constitutional and legal history.

The spot served as the place where the law-speaker proclaimed laws and where major legal and political decisions were made; it became a focal point of national identity. Today the area is marked and interpreted for visitors, with viewpoints and signage explaining its historical role.

The Alþingi convened at Þingvellir from its foundation around 930 until the late 18th century; the site later gained symbolic status during the 19th and 20th centuries and is protected as part of a UNESCO World Heritage property.

Geographically Lögberg sits in southwestern Iceland inside the Þingvellir rift valley, roughly 40-50 kilometres northeast of Reykjavík and set amid tectonic fissures and lake basins characteristic of the park.

  • Viewing point: Traditionally identified as the speaker's platform of the medieval Icelandic Alþingi; best viewed within Þingvellir National Park's interpretive areas.
  • UNESCO site: Part of the UNESCO-listed Þingvellir site, which preserves both natural rift valley features and the historic assembly grounds.
