How to Get to Lochnagar #
By car: Lochnagar (the mountain) is approached from the Dee valley/Balmoral area. Drive from Ballater or Crathie along local roads off the A93 (the road between Aberdeen and Braemar) to the Glen Muick/Loch Muick car parks where popular ascent routes begin.
By public transport: Ballater is the nearest village with bus connections from Aberdeen; from Ballater or Crathie take a taxi or walk to the trailhead parking areas and then follow marked hill paths (the initial approach from parking is typically on foot for several kilometres).
Tips for Visiting Lochnagar #
- Start your ascent from the Glen Muick/Spittal car park area (the usual trailhead) and head out early-this gives the best light and fewer visitors on the popular route.
- If you want a quieter day, take one of the less-used ridges or return via a loop rather than the main up-and-down path; Lochnagar's surrounding terrain rewards detours with broad views over Loch Muick and the Cairngorms.
- Late spring and early summer show alpine flowers on the upper slopes-plan your visit then if botanical interest is a priority.
Best Time to Visit Lochnagar #
Best visited in summer (June-September) for safer, snow-free conditions and the most accessible walking routes.
