Loch Lomond
Lake Scenic freshwater loch and popular recreational area
Scotland’s Loch Lomond combines a large freshwater loch with islands, shoreline villages like Luss, and hill trails. Boating, fishing, and hiking into the nearby Trossachs draw day-trippers and multi-day walkers.
Loch Lomond is a large freshwater loch in central Scotland and is the largest lake by surface area in Great Britain, covering about 71 km². It forms the western edge of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
The loch is popular for boating, hiking and island visits. The shoreline includes villages and piers where passenger cruises and private boats operate, and the area offers walking routes, hill climbs and watersports across the loch’s roughly 30 islands.
The loch is a glacially formed freshwater body that has been used historically for fishing, transport and settlement; it became a core feature of the national park when that park was designated in 2002. Local estates and villages have influenced access and visitor facilities over time.
Geographically it sits on the Highland boundary between the Trossachs and the lowlands, with its southern shore near Balloch and its eastern hills including Ben Lomond. The loch is roughly 25-40 km northwest of Glasgow, with road and rail links to nearby villages.
- Ben Lomond summit: Summit routes to the 974 m peak provide some of the best panoramic views over the loch and surrounding Trossachs.
- Islands: Contains roughly 30 islands, including Inchmurrin, the largest freshwater island in the British Isles.
What to See #
- Balloch: Village at the southern end of the loch serving as the main gateway for boat cruises and visitor facilities; close to the River Leven outflow.
- Luss: Conservation village on the western shore noted for its waterfront promenade and historic stone cottages; a common stop for day visitors.
- Inchmurrin: The largest island on the loch and one of the largest freshwater islands in the British Isles, home to wooded grounds and a few private buildings.
- Ben Lomond: Prominent mountain on the eastern shore with a summit elevation of 974 m, offering direct hillwalks and panoramic views over the loch.
