Llullaillaco

Llullaillaco is a high stratovolcano on the border between Argentina and Chile in the Puna de Atacama region, notable for its great elevation above sea level and for archaeological discoveries near its summit. It is one of the highest volcanoes in the world and forms part of the high Andean plateau.

The mountain gained international scientific attention after archaeological expeditions documented Inca ritual offerings and well-preserved human remains buried near the summit. These finds have contributed to understanding high-altitude Inca ceremonial practices.

Geologically, Llullaillaco is a composite volcano in an arid, high-elevation environment; snow, ice and very low temperatures occur at the highest elevations and weather can change rapidly. The volcano straddles the international border and is accessed from high-elevation Andean roads and trails.

Llullaillaco sits in the central Andes on the Argentina-Chile frontier, in a sparsely populated high plateau region characterized by dry puna grassland and salt flats.
