Llansteffan Castle
Castle Ruined coastal castle overlooking Carmarthen Bay
Ruined medieval castle above Llansteffan village overlooking the River Tywi estuary in Wales. Tourists climb to the battlements for coastal views, beach access and photographic opportunities.
Llansteffan Castle is a ruined medieval coastal fortress on a promontory above the village of Llansteffan on the north shore of Carmarthen Bay in southwest Wales. The site dates to the 12th century and dominates the mouth of the River Towy.
The castle ruins occupy a compact hilltop with exposed curtain walls and earthworks and offer broad views over the bay and the adjacent sandy beach. The visible remains are best appreciated from the southern ramparts and the adjacent footpaths that link the site to the village.
The original stronghold was constructed in the 12th century by Norman lords and later changed hands during the medieval period between local Welsh rulers and Anglo-Norman authorities. Over subsequent centuries the castle fell into disuse and is today a managed ruin under Welsh heritage authorities.
The ruin stands immediately above Llansteffan village in Carmarthenshire, on the north side of Carmarthen Bay. The site is reached from local roads and by footpaths from the village shore.
- Views: Panoramic views across Carmarthen Bay from the castle ramparts make the site valuable for photography and sunset visits.
- Access: Access is on foot from the village of Llansteffan; paths are short but steep and parking is in the village rather than at the ruins.
