Ruined Norman castle in Llandovery, Wales, overlooking the town; visitors explore masonry remains and use nearby footpaths for river valley walks.
Llandovery Castle is a ruined medieval castle overlooking the town of Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The site includes earthworks and fragmentary stone remains from its medieval fortifications and occupies a prominent position above the town.
Remains visible today reflect the castle’s origins as a Norman-era fortification and later medieval strengthening; much of the original structure has been dismantled or reduced to low masonry but the motte, bailey and some curtain wall fragments are apparent. The site offers views over the surrounding town and countryside.
The castle was established during the medieval period as part of the Norman advance into west Wales and was involved in the regional conflicts between Welsh princes and Norman or English lords across the 12th and 13th centuries. Over time it fell into decline and became a ruin.
Llandovery Castle stands immediately above the town centre of Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, situated on elevated ground that overlooks the local streets and the River Towy valley.
- Ruins and layout: The site comprises visible medieval earthworks and ruined masonry rather than a fully intact keep, so the prime interest is the visible layout and panoramic views over the town.
