Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
Religious Site Modern Catholic cathedral in Liverpool with circular design
Circular Catholic cathedral by Sir Frederick Gibberd on Liverpool’s Mount Pleasant, noted for its modernist concrete design, tall lantern tower and panoramic views from upper levels.
Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, formally the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Liverpool and the seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool. The completed building is a notable example of mid-20th-century ecclesiastical architecture.
The cathedral has a circular plan arranged around a central altar beneath a conical lantern tower and offers panoramic interior views from the nave. The building hosts regular liturgies, concerts and civic events, and is often visited together with the nearby Anglican cathedral on Hope Street.
The current cathedral was designed and built in the mid-20th century following long-standing plans for a new metropolitan cathedral; construction was completed in the 1960s. The modern design replaced earlier unbuilt proposals and established the site as the Roman Catholic seat in the city.
The cathedral stands on Hope Street in central Liverpool, close to the city’s cultural and academic quarter and within walking distance of Liverpool Lime Street station.
- Design and function: Designed by architect Sir Frederick Gibberd and completed in the 1960s, it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool.
