Liverpool Cathedral
Religious Site England's largest cathedral, monumental Gothic Revival architecture
Liverpool Cathedral crowns St James’s Mount with a vast Gothic interior, a tower observation deck and active music programme; visitors come for architecture, choral concerts and city views.
Liverpool Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool, is the Anglican cathedral located on a ridge between the city centre and the university quarter. It was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built over much of the 20th century, becoming one of the city’s principal landmarks.
The building contains a long stone-vaulted nave, choir and chapels, extensive stained glass, and a central tower that provides panoramic views across Liverpool. The cathedral is an active place of worship and also stages concerts, exhibitions and community events, and guided tours explain the architecture and history.
Its construction was carried out in phases during the 20th century according to Scott’s designs, with final elements completed in the later decades of the century. The cathedral is notable for its scale and for forming a visual counterpoint to the city’s waterfront and civic architecture.
The cathedral stands on Hope Street close to Liverpool’s university precinct and is within easy walking distance of the city centre and major transport hubs.
