Little River Canyon National Preserve

Little River Canyon National Preserve in northeastern Alabama conserves a scenic river canyon on Lookout Mountain noted for cliffs, waterfalls, and rocky river sections. The preserve protects natural and cultural features and offers outdoor recreation.

The area was designated a national preserve in the early 1990s to protect the canyon’s natural character and to provide managed recreation. Local use and conservation efforts have shaped trail and facility development since designation.

The preserve sits on Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne and northeast Alabama, within a forested plateau landscape north of Gadsden and southeast of Huntsville.

• Grace's High Falls: Grace's High Falls, a seasonal waterfall within the preserve that reaches about 133 feet and is Alabama's tallest waterfall when flowing.
• Rim overlooks: Canyon rim viewpoints and picnic areas offering panoramic views of the Little River flowing along the canyon floor and the cliffs of Lookout Mountain.
• Trails and water access: Trailheads provide access to hiking routes along the rim and limited routes into the canyon; some swimming and paddling are possible in designated, safer spots.
