Little Hagia Sophia
Church Byzantine-era church converted into an early Ottoman mosque
Little Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, a compact Byzantine church later converted to a mosque, attracts visitors for its 6th‑century architecture, surviving mosaics and proximity to the Sultanahmet district.
Little Hagia Sophia is a historic Byzantine building in Istanbul originally constructed as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in the 6th century. It is an important example of early Byzantine domed architecture and is located close to the larger Hagia Sophia complex.
The building is smaller than its famous neighbour but shares architectural features such as a central dome and a compact, domed basilica plan; it has served both as a church and, later, as a mosque. Visitors note the church’s compact interior and surviving decorative elements that reflect its early Byzantine origin.
It was built during the same era as the great churches of Constantinople and later became part of the Ottoman-era religious landscape when it was converted for Muslim worship. The structure has been conserved and is accessible within Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet area.
Little Hagia Sophia stands in Istanbul’s Fatih district in the historic Sultanahmet quarter, a short walk from Hagia Sophia and other central Byzantine and Ottoman monuments.
- 6th-century church: Constructed in the 6th century and built as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, it is closely associated with the reign of Emperor Justinian.
