Main image

Little Hagia Sophia is a historic Byzantine building in Istanbul originally constructed as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in the 6th century. It is an important example of early Byzantine domed architecture and is located close to the larger Hagia Sophia complex.

The building is smaller than its famous neighbour but shares architectural features such as a central dome and a compact, domed basilica plan; it has served both as a church and, later, as a mosque. Visitors note the church’s compact interior and surviving decorative elements that reflect its early Byzantine origin.

It was built during the same era as the great churches of Constantinople and later became part of the Ottoman-era religious landscape when it was converted for Muslim worship. The structure has been conserved and is accessible within Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet area.

Little Hagia Sophia stands in Istanbul’s Fatih district in the historic Sultanahmet quarter, a short walk from Hagia Sophia and other central Byzantine and Ottoman monuments.

  • 6th-century church: Constructed in the 6th century and built as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, it is closely associated with the reign of Emperor Justinian.

How to Get to Little Hagia Sophia #

Little Hagia Sophia (Küçük Ayasofya) is in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, a short walk from the main historic sites. Take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet station and walk about 3-5 minutes southeast along pedestrian routes in the historic peninsula to reach the mosque. The site is also within easy walking distance of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

Tips for Visiting Little Hagia Sophia #

  • Visit outside the main Sultanahmet rush hours - early morning or late afternoon visits let you step inside between larger tour groups drawn to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
  • Approach on foot from the Sultanahmet tram stop and include Little Hagia Sophia in a short walking loop with the Hippodrome and Gülhane Park to avoid multiple long lines - it's compact and works well as a quick historical stop.
  • Be mindful of prayer times and that the building functions as a mosque: photography and interior access can be restricted during services, so check timings on the day of your visit.
