Lisbon Oceanarium
Museum Large Atlantic aquarium featuring global marine ecosystems
Lisbon Oceanarium at Parque das Nações centers on a large central tank with sharks, rays and pelagic life; families and marine enthusiasts visit for exhibits on ocean ecosystems.
The Lisbon Oceanarium is a large public aquarium on the north bank of the Tagus River in Lisbon’s Parque das Nações district, established as part of the site’s redevelopment for Expo ‘98. It presents a series of marine habitats and a centrally placed large tank that together showcase a wide variety of oceanic species.
The venue’s main feature is a central open-view tank surrounded by four habitat galleries that simulate different ocean regions, providing visible connections between pelagic species and coastal assemblages. Exhibits include temperate and tropical fish, sharks, rays and invertebrates, with interpretive displays focused on ocean ecosystems and conservation.
The oceanarium regularly runs timed feeding displays and educational programmes and is designed to be visited in a 1.5-3 hour visit depending on interest. Accessibility is straightforward via the nearby Oriente train and metro station, and the site sits among riverside promenades and contemporary public spaces.
Situated in Parque das Nações on the Tagus riverfront, the oceanarium is adjacent to the Vasco da Gama Tower and the modern transport hub at Gare do Oriente, approximately 5 kilometres northeast of Lisbon’s historic centre.
- Location and history: Opened for Expo '98 in Lisbon and located in the Parque das Nações district, the oceanarium is one of Europe's best-known indoor aquariums and is close to Oriente transport hub.
What to See #
- Central tank: Global Ocean Tank - a large central tank around which the two-storey visitor galleries are arranged, representing a composite of oceanic habitats and hosting large pelagic species and schooling fish.
- Surrounding habitat galleries: Four Habitat Galleries - separate exhibits that surround the central tank and represent distinct oceanic regions with species assemblages and habitat displays.
How to Get to Lisbon Oceanarium #
The Lisbon Oceanarium (Oceanário de Lisboa) is in Parque das Nações - take the Lisbon Metro Red Line to Oriente (Gare do Oriente) and walk about 5-10 minutes along the riverfront and through the park to the Oceanarium. From central Lisbon (Baixa/Chiado) the metro ride is the most direct option; the site is also reachable by buses and by car via Avenida Infante D. Henrique / the A12 approaches.
Tips for Visiting Lisbon Oceanarium #
- Best time of day: go right at opening on weekday mornings or late afternoons on weekdays to avoid peak family crowds and large tour groups that arrive midday.
- Which entrance/transport tip: access the Oceanário from Gare do Oriente / Oriente metro/train station and follow the Parque das Nações promenade; the aquarium is a short walk from the station and signage is clear.
- What many miss and how to get more out of the visit: view the central tank from multiple levels and different angles for varied perspectives of the same animals, then extend your visit with the riverside walk and nearby science and transport attractions in Parque das Nações.
