Lipica Stud Farm

Lipica Stud Farm is a historic stud farm in the Municipality of Sežana in southwestern Slovenia, renowned as the origin of the Lipizzaner horse. The estate was established in 1580 and has continued as a working stud focused on breeding and training Lipizzaner horses.

The site offers guided tours of the stables, a museum with historical material about the stud and the breed, and scheduled riding demonstrations that display classical training methods. Visitors can see the horses in their paddocks and view traditional stable architecture.

The farm was founded under Habsburg auspices in the late 16th century to develop horses for imperial service and ceremonial use; over centuries it supplied trained horses to imperial riding institutions and maintained breeding lines. It has remained an active stud through political changes in the region and today combines conservation, tourism and equestrian education.

Lipica lies in the Karst plateau near Sežana in southwestern Slovenia, close to the border with Italy and within driving distance of the coastal city of Trieste. The estate sits on mixed pasture and woodland typical of the Karst landscape.
