Lingaraja Temple

Lingaraja Temple is a major Hindu temple in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, dedicated primarily to Shiva and dating to the medieval period (circa 11th century). It is one of the largest and most important temples in the city.

The complex presents characteristic Kalinga-style stone architecture with a prominent tower over the sanctum and several halls and subsidiary shrines; visitors come to view the temple sculpture, architecture and daily worship rituals. The site remains an active place of worship and is crowded during major festivals, especially Mahashivaratri.

Construction of the temple complex is attributed to regional rulers of the medieval period in Odisha and the structure shows successive phases of building and renovation from the 11th century onward. It has remained in continuous religious use since its completion.

The temple sits in the old city of Bhubaneswar, immediately north of the Bindusagar tank and within the dense historic core of the city, making it easily reachable from central Bhubaneswar.

• Best time to visit: Early morning and late afternoon are the most suitable times to see daily rituals with fewer crowds, while the main festival Mahashivaratri draws large local crowds each year.
• Photography note: Photography is commonly permitted in the outer parts of the complex but is restricted inside the central sanctum where active worship continues.

What to See #

• Bindusagar tank: A large rectangular holy tank immediately north of the temple complex that is used for ritual bathing and remains an integral part of the temple precinct.
• Sanctum and mandapas: The temple's main sanctum is surmounted by a tall curvilinear tower and is approached through an assembly hall and subsidiary mandapas forming the core ritual spaces of the complex.
