Lindos
Section of Populated Place Seaside town on Rhodes with hilltop ancient acropolis
On Rhodes’ east coast, Lindos combines a clifftop Acropolis with whitewashed lanes and small bays. Travelers climb Doric ruins, eat seafood in shaded tavernas and swim at nearby pebble beaches.
Lindos is a coastal village and archaeological site on the east coast of the island of Rhodes in the South Aegean region of Greece, best known for its clifftop Acropolis. The site combines ancient Greek, Hellenistic and medieval remains above a whitewashed village and sheltered bays.
The Acropolis of Lindos crowns a steep promontory and contains the remains of a Doric temple to Athena and fortifications of a medieval citadel built by the Knights of St John. The village below offers narrow streets, traditional architecture and access to beaches such as St. Paul’s Bay, making it a compact destination for history and seaside visits.
Lindos has a long history of settlement from antiquity through the medieval period, reflected in its layered archaeological remains. The Acropolis was adapted and reused across periods, with fortifications added in the medieval era.
The village and Acropolis sit on Rhodes’ eastern coast; Lindos is a well-established tourist destination on the island and is reached by road from Rhodes town and other island centres.
- Access and timing: Access to the Acropolis is via stepped pathways and a short climb from the village; mornings and late afternoons are best to avoid peak heat and crowds.
What to See #
- Acropolis of Lindos: The Acropolis of Lindos occupies a steep rocky promontory above the town and includes remains of a Doric temple to Athena and a medieval citadel built by the Knights of St John.
- Lindos village: The compact whitewashed village below the Acropolis has narrow streets, traditional houses and tavernas concentrated around a central square.
- Beaches (St. Paul's Bay): St. Paul's Bay and other nearby small beaches provide sheltered swimming and are immediately below the Acropolis cliffs.
How to Get to Lindos #
Lindos is on the east coast of Rhodes island, about 45-55 km southeast of Rhodes Town. From Rhodes city take the regular KTEL intercity bus to Lindos from the central bus station (journey ~50-60 minutes) or drive along the coastal road (main island roads toward Lindos). The village itself is largely pedestrianised; from the bus stop or parking area expect a steep 10-20 minute walk up through the town to the Acropolis and main sights.
Tips for Visiting Lindos #
- Visit the Lindos Acropolis early (before 10:00) or late afternoon (after ~17:00) to avoid the midday cruise-ship rush and heat; mornings give the clearest sea views and softer light for photos.
- Approach the site on foot through the main village lanes from Lindos square rather than taking the donkey queue-the pedestrian route spreads visitors out and offers a quieter, more scenic ascent past the whitewashed houses.
- Most visitors head straight for the Acropolis; don't miss the coastal footpaths and small bays (east toward Pallas/St. Paul's Bay) that are far less crowded and reward you with secluded viewpoints and calmer swimming spots.
- If you want the best photos of the Acropolis against the bay, time your visit for late afternoon when the sun lights the cliff face and many day-trippers have already left.
Best Time to Visit Lindos #
Best visited in late spring or early autumn (May-June, September) for pleasant weather and far fewer crowds than midsummer.
