Lindisfarne
Island Tidal island with medieval priory and Celtic heritage
Tidal island off Northumberland connected by a causeway, featuring priory ruins and Lindisfarne Castle. Pilgrimage history, birdwatching and coastal walks draw visitors-check tide times.
Lindisfarne, often called Holy Island, is a tidal island off the coast of Northumberland, England, that became an important center of early English Christianity. A monastery was founded there in the early 7th century and the island is associated with early medieval learning and art.
Principal attractions are the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, a later castle, and the island’s tidal causeway which links it to the mainland. The coastal environment and the priory ruins are compact and walkable; the island is a focal point for religious history and birdlife.
The monastic community was established in the early 600s and Lindisfarne is notable in history for the recorded Viking raid in 793, often cited as a marker for the start of the Viking Age in Britain. Over the medieval and modern periods the priory fell into ruin while the castle was constructed and modified for defence and later preserved for visitors.
The island lies just off the Northumberland coast and is reached via a short causeway from the village of Beal on the mainland; the surrounding landscape is tidal flats, saltmarsh and sandy shorelines with the nearest mainland service centres a short drive away.
- Access: Tide-dependent access - the causeway is covered at high tide so published safe crossing times must be consulted before visiting.
- Viewing tips: Best photographic views are from the priory and the castle, especially at low tide and at sunrise or sunset when the light is low and directional.
What to See #
- Lindisfarne Priory: Ruined monastery complex on the north shore, founded in the 7th century and later rebuilt; visible cloister walls and church ruins form the principal historic attraction.
- Lindisfarne Castle: Fortified castle on the island's south-west promontory, constructed in the 16th century and partially rebuilt in later periods, offering views across Lindisfarne and the mainland.
- Causeway: Tidal causeway linking the island to the mainland; it is covered at high tide and crossing times must be checked before travel.
How to Get to Lindisfarne #
Drive or take public transport to the village of Beal, then follow the A1 and local roads to the causeway. The causeway is subject to tides-consult local tide timetables and National Trust advice before crossing. There is limited public parking on the mainland side.
Tips for Visiting Lindisfarne #

- Enter Lindisfarne Priory through the coastal viewpoint for the classic composition of sea, ruin, and castle on the hill.
