The Lincoln Memorial is a monumental memorial on the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., dedicated in 1922 to honor President Abraham Lincoln. The central feature is a large seated statue of Lincoln inside a Greek Doric-style temple.
Visitors enter a columned temple chamber to view the 19-foot-tall seated figure of Lincoln and read the engraved texts of his Gettysburg Address and second inaugural address. The memorial’s raised steps and plaza look across the long Reflecting Pool toward the Washington Monument.
The site is an important ceremonial and civic space, notably the location where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. Visitor pathways and steps provide multiple vantage points for the memorial and the axial view down the Mall.
The memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon and the seated statue was sculpted by Daniel Chester French; construction took place in the 1910s and the monument was dedicated on May 30, 1922. It was built as a national commemoration of Lincoln’s presidency and legacy.
Located at the western terminus of the National Mall on the edge of the Reflecting Pool, the memorial sits at the west end of the park in central Washington, D.C.
