How to Get to Lifau

Lifau (Oecusse) is best reached by a combination of air to a regional airport and then by road; the area's transport is limited so expect multi-leg journeys and basic facilities. The main international entry point for Timor-Leste is Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili (DIL); travellers also sometimes approach by land from Indonesian West Timor (Kupang).

By Air

Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL): Dili is Timor-Leste’s main international gateway. From Dili you can catch domestic flights or arrange land transfers to Oecusse; a taxi from Dili airport to Dili city centre typically takes 20-30 minutes and costs around USD 10-20.

El Tari International Airport, Kupang (KOE): Kupang (on Indonesian West Timor) is the nearest larger Indonesian airport if you are combining travel from Indonesia. From Kupang you need to cross the land border into Oecusse by road; expect full-day travel including border formalities and intercity minibus or private transfer fares that vary widely (budget several hours and USD 20-60 for shared land transfers).

By Train & Bus

Train: There are no rail services in Timor-Leste; rail travel is not an option for reaching Lifau.

Bus / Road: Lifau is in the Oecusse exclave on Timor’s northwest coast and is reached mainly by road. From Dili or Kupang you travel by intercity bus/minibus or private transfer; typical intercity bus legs inside Timor-Leste are basic and slow - allow several hours to a full day depending on route and border crossings. Local minibuses and shared taxis are the common low-cost option; private hires offer faster, more reliable door-to-door service.

How to Get Around Lifau #

Lifau is very small and easy to walk; most places in town are within a few minutes on foot. Roads outside town can be rough, so expect slow drives if you hire a car. There is no formal public-transport hub here-travelers rely on hired cars or motorbike taxis to reach other parts of Oecusse (Pante Macassar and surrounding villages). Carry cash and a local SIM if you need to arrange a ride or a driver.
