Liébana is a mountainous valley and comarca in the western part of Cantabria in northern Spain, centred on the town of Potes. The area is notable for steep glacial valleys and its religious and pastoral traditions.
The landscape includes high mountain cirques and gorges that form part of the Picos de Europa. A popular lift at Fuente Dé rises about 753 metres from the valley to high-elevation trails, giving walkers and climbers quick access to alpine routes.
The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is the region’s principal religious site and has been an important pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages; it is traditionally associated with a relic known as the Lignum Crucis. The valley’s towns, hamlets and mountain pastures reflect a long history of rural and ecclesiastical life.
Liébana sits inland in western Cantabria, framed by the limestone massif of the Picos de Europa. The comarca is accessed from the Cantabrian lowlands by mountain roads and is the nearest major centre of services to the surrounding high country.
