How to Get to Lidingö#
Lidingö is part of the Stockholm public‑transport network; the easiest approach is to fly into Arlanda, transfer into central Stockholm, then use the metro and Lidingöbanan or SL buses to reach the island. Public transport is reliable and usually faster than a taxi in peak hours.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN): Arlanda is the main international gateway to Stockholm County. From ARN take the Arlanda Express to Stockholm Central (20 min) then metro or commuter rail to Ropsten and connect to Lidingö by the Lidingöbanan or bus; total travel time to central Lidingö is about 45-60 minutes. Taxi to Lidingö is ≈30-45 minutes and costs around SEK 500-700 depending on traffic.
Stockholm Bromma (BMA): Bromma is closer to the city; from there take buses or tram/metro connections via central Stockholm and then onward to Lidingö (total travel around 30-50 minutes).
Train: Lidingö is served by the Lidingöbanan light rail (part of SL network) which connects to Ropsten (the metro’s end station) in Stockholm. Use SL tickets (single ticket c. SEK 39 as of current SL fares) covering buses, metro and trams within the central zones.
Bus: Several SL bus lines cross the Lidingöbron (bridge) connecting Lidingö with Stockholm (e.g., bus 201/204 variants); buses are frequent during the day and accept SL tickets. Commuter rail (Pendeltåg) and metro connections at Ropsten/central Stockholm make transfers straightforward.
How to Get Around Lidingö#
Public transport (SL) is the best way to get to and around Lidingö-use the Arlanda Express or regional rail into central Stockholm and transfer to the metro and Lidingöbanan. Taxis are convenient but more expensive; the island itself is very walkable.
- Lidingöbanan (light rail) (SEK 39 (single SL ticket)) - Lidingöbanan is a frequent light‑rail line linking Lidingö with Ropsten (metro). It is integrated into Stockholm’s SL ticketing system and runs every few minutes at peak times. Ideal for reaching central Lidingö and short trips around the island.
- SL buses (SEK 39) - Multiple SL bus lines run across Lidingöbron to Stockholm (bus 201 and variants are common). Buses accept the same SL tickets and are useful for destinations not right on the Lidingöbanan line. Expect reliable frequency during weekdays.
- Metro + commuter rail (T‑banan) (SEK 39) - Take the metro to Ropsten and transfer to the Lidingöbanan, or use commuter rail into central Stockholm then connect by metro/bus. Stockholm’s integrated ticketing makes transfers simple-buy a single SL ticket for the whole journey within the valid time window.
- Taxi / Rideshare (SEK 200-SEK 700) - Taxis offer convenience for door‑to‑door travel, particularly with luggage or late arrivals. Expect higher fares from Arlanda (c. SEK 500-700). Use licensed firms or app-based services to avoid overcharges.
- Walking - Lidingö’s neighbourhoods and waterfront are pleasant to explore on foot; many attractions and parks are accessible by short walks from tram or bus stops. Wear comfortable shoes for mixed pavements and coastal paths.
