Licancabur

Volcano Striking Andean stratovolcano with near-perfect conical summit

A stratovolcano on the Bolivia-Chile border, Licancabur has a high-altitude crater and wide views over the Atacama. Climbers attempt its steep slopes; photographers and acclimatizing trekkers use nearby desert bases to approach the mountain.

Main image

Licancabur is a prominent stratovolcano on the border between Bolivia and Chile, noted for its symmetrical conical profile and a crater lake near the summit. Its summit rises to roughly 5,920 metres, making it one of the notable high volcanoes of the Central Andes.

The volcano provides panoramic views across the Atacama region and the surrounding high-altitude salt flats and deserts. Its conical shape and summit crater with a small lake are distinctive features often photographed from routes in the region.

Licancabur formed through volcanic activity in the Pleistocene and Holocene; it is part of the chain of Andean stratovolcanoes along the Chile-Bolivia frontier. Human activity around the volcano has included archaeological interest in high-elevation ritual sites and scientific studies of high-altitude crater lakes.

Geographically Licancabur sits on the western edge of the Bolivian Altiplano near the border with northern Chile, within the high, dry landscapes of the southern Andes. The mountain is accessed from regional towns on both sides of the frontier and is visible from approaches across the Atacama desert.

  • Elevation: The summit reaches approximately 5,920 metres above sea level, forming a near-perfect volcanic cone that is visible from the surrounding Atacama highlands.
  • Access concerns: High altitude and remote desert approach mean ascents require careful acclimatisation and logistical support; the summit area contains a small crater lake.

Tips for Visiting Licancabur #

  • Use Uyuni or San Pedro de Atacama as acclimatization bases before attempting any ascent - Licancabur is very high and many visitors first view it from the nearby high-altitude salt flats and lagoons.
  • Attempt climbs only with an experienced local guide and on the dry season (roughly May-September) when conditions are most stable; independent attempts are hazardous at this altitude.
  • If you're not climbing, see Licancabur from the shorelines of Laguna Verde and Laguna Blanca in the morning for dramatic reflections and clear views before afternoon winds pick up.

Best Time to Visit Licancabur #

For clear, safer conditions on this high Andean volcano, plan visits in the dry season (May-October), when storms are least frequent.

Dry season (best for trekking)
May-October · daytime: cold to cool; nights: well below freezing
Clear skies and stable weather make summit attempts and high‑altitude trekking safer, though nights are very cold and UV exposure is high.
Wet season
November-April · cool to cold with frequent storms
Increased snowfall and afternoon thunderstorms reduce visibility and make climbing and travel riskier.
