Library of Celsus is an ancient Roman library in the classical city of Ephesus, İzmir Province, constructed in the early second century CE as a monumental sepulchral-library. It is one of the best-known surviving library façades from the Roman world.

The two-story façade with ornate columns and statue niches is the site’s principal visual feature and was reconstructed from original architectural fragments. The library originally functioned as both a reading room and a memorial to Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus.

Built in the Roman imperial period by the son in honor of Celsus, the building later suffered damage from earthquakes and other events before partial collapse and modern restoration. The site now forms a key highlight of the wider Ephesus archaeological area.

The library stands within the ruins of Ephesus near the modern town of Selçuk in İzmir Province on Turkey’s Aegean coast.

  • Scroll capacity: The original library was built in the early second century CE and held an estimated 12,000 scrolls.
  • Reconstructed façade: The impressive two-story facade visible today was reconstructed from original fragments during 20th-century restoration work.
