Liathach
Mountain Torridon mountain massif in Northwest Highlands
Torridon mountain in northwest Scotland prized by walkers and scramblers for long ridges, steep quartzite faces and extensive views across lochs and neighboring peaks.
Liathach is a major mountain massif in the Torridon Hills of the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, distinguished by a long, rocky ridge and several prominent pinnacles. It is one of the area’s most notable mountaineering routes and contains two principal Munro summits.
Walks along the ridge include exposed scrambling sections and narrow crestlines that attract experienced hillwalkers; the route offers extensive views over Loch Torridon and the surrounding highland landscape. The mountain is formed largely of Torridonian sandstone, which gives its slopes a characteristic red-brown colour and steep, blocky profiles.
The massif has been part of traditional hillland use and modern recreational climbing for many decades, and it remains an important objective in the Scottish mountaineering calendar. Access is typically from roadheads in the Torridon area, with approaches crossing moorland and ridgeline terrain.
Liathach lies in Wester Ross in the Northwest Highlands, rising above the glens and lochs of the Torridon district and visible from the surrounding coastal and inland routes.
