Letocetum
Archaeological Site Roman town ruins and archaeological site in Staffordshire
Roman settlement at Letocetum (Wall, Staffordshire) preserves earthworks, reconstructed timber buildings and a small visitor centre; people visit for Roman archaeology and nearby walking routes.
Letocetum is the site of a Roman roadside settlement and posting station in central England, located beside the Roman road Watling Street. It is notable for its excavated foundations and a Roman bath complex that are open for interpretation and study.
On site there are visible earthworks and archaeological remains that illustrate the layout of a Roman mansio and associated buildings beside the road. A small collection of finds and interpretation panels explain the site’s role in Roman Britain.
The settlement was established and occupied during the Roman period as a stopping place and service point on the major north-south route. Over time the area fell out of use as Roman administrative structures declined and the site survived as earthworks and buried remains until archaeological investigation.
Letocetum lies near the modern village of Wall in Staffordshire, adjacent to the historic line of Watling Street and close to the present A5 road corridor, in the English Midlands.
