Lesser Tunbs
Island Group of contested Persian Gulf islands under Iranian control
A small group of islands in the Persian Gulf administered by Iran and subject to international dispute; access is restricted and civilian visits are limited.
The Lesser Tunbs are a group of small islands in the Persian Gulf located near the Strait of Hormuz and administered as part of Iran’s Hormozgan province. They occupy a strategic position in the northern Gulf and are close to the Iranian coast and the eastern coasts of the United Arab Emirates.
The islands are sparsely vegetated and host limited infrastructure and settlements; their strategic position has led to military and administrative use rather than tourism. They are best known for their geopolitical significance rather than recreational amenities.
Control of the islands has been contested in modern times, and they are subject to international dispute between Iran and the UAE. Access for foreign visitors is restricted and typically not available for standard tourism.
Geographically they lie in the northern Persian Gulf, close to the main shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz and near the coastlines of southern Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
- Sovereignty and access: Sovereignty over these small islands is disputed; they are administered by Iran but claimed by the United Arab Emirates, and access is tightly controlled.
