Les Halles
Market Central Paris district and major transport hub
Central Paris neighborhood around the Forum des Halles, historically the city’s wholesale market. Today it serves as a transit hub with an underground shopping complex, restaurants and access to nearby museums and streets.
Les Halles is a central Paris neighborhood and historic market quarter that today combines a major shopping complex and one of the city’s principal transport interchanges.
The modern Forum des Halles and its public spaces sit above an extensive underground transport hub and commercial area; nearby are historic streets and the large Église Saint-Eustache. The area functions as both a shopping destination and a major passenger interchange.
For centuries Les Halles was Paris’s central wholesale food market; the original market complex was dismantled and relocated in the late 20th century and the site was redeveloped into the present commercial, cultural and transport complex.
Les Halles lies in central Paris in the 1st arrondissement, adjacent to the Île de la Cité and within walking distance of the Seine and several central Paris neighborhoods.
- Transport hub: Châtelet-Les Halles is one of Paris's largest transit interchanges, connecting RER commuter lines with multiple Métro lines and serving huge passenger volumes daily.
What to See #
- Forum des Halles: The Forum des Halles is a large underground commercial and cultural complex built on the former market site, containing shops, cinemas and public spaces.
- Église Saint-Eustache: Église Saint-Eustache is a large 16th- and 17th-century church on the edge of the Les Halles area, historically associated with the market district.
- Châtelet-Les Halles station: Châtelet-Les Halles station is a major public-transport interchange that links multiple Metro lines with the RER commuter network beneath the site.
How to Get to Les Halles #
Les Halles is in central Paris adjacent to Châtelet. Use the Châtelet-Les Halles transport hub (RER A, B, D and multiple Metro lines) - the shopping complex and historic market area are immediately adjacent to the station, essentially a few minutes’ walk from the platforms.
Tips for Visiting Les Halles #
- Visit Les Halles outside weekday rush hours - early mornings on weekdays or late evenings - to avoid the heavy commuter flows through the Châtelet-Les Halles transit hub.
- Enter the shopping and garden complex via rue Berger/Forum des Halles or from the public garden (Jardin Nelson Mandela) behind the Forum for quicker access to quieter areas and to bypass some of the busiest metro exits.
- If you want a quieter experience, explore the alleys north and east of Les Halles (toward Rue Montorgueil and Église Saint-Eustache) where many visitors miss smaller food shops, cafés and local markets.
Best Time to Visit Les Halles #
For indoor and transit-heavy Les Halles, weekday mornings and shoulder seasons tend to have the lightest crowds; summer is the busiest.
