Lemmenjoki National Park
Park Vast northern wilderness park with river valleys and tundra
In Finnish Lapland, Lemmenjoki National Park offers river valleys, pine forest and fells; hikers and canoeists explore marked trails, and hobby gold panners test sluices along the Lemmenjoki River.
Lemmenjoki National Park is a large protected area in Finnish Lapland, northern Finland, established to protect subarctic wilderness and traditional Sámi land use. It is one of Finland’s largest national parks and is renowned for wild river valleys and extensive hiking territory.
The park offers marked trails, wilderness huts and river routes that cross a mix of pine forest, wetlands and fell landscapes; it is also known for its history of small-scale gold panning along the Lemmenjoki river. Visitors come for multi-day treks, wildlife observation and remote wilderness experience.
The park was created in the mid-20th century to safeguard the area’s natural and cultural values and has been managed to balance recreation with conservation and traditional uses.
Lemmenjoki lies in northern Lapland, within the Arctic Circle, and is reached from regional towns in Lapland; nearest access points are small villages and ranger stations at the park edges rather than major cities.
- Landscape and gold panning: Noted for its subarctic fells, river valleys and boreal forest - the park is also known for small-scale gold panning along the Lemmenjoki river.
Tips for Visiting Lemmenjoki National Park #
- Plan summer visits (June-September) for the best hiking and hut access; winter brings limited trail access and very different conditions for anyone seeking the Northern Lights.
- Before setting out, consult Metsähallitus (the Finnish Parks authority) or local visitor information for route conditions and hut rules - the park is large and services are sparse, so up-to-date local information matters.
- If you want solitude, choose longer marked routes and remote sections of the park rather than the short popular loops, and allow extra time for travel between trailheads.
Best Time to Visit Lemmenjoki National Park #
Visit Lemmenjoki National Park in summer for long daylight and easier access, or in autumn/winter if you want fall colors or snow-covered wilderness.
