Lelu Island

Lelu Island (often written Leluh) is a small island off the coast of Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia noted for its pre-contact archaeological remains. The island lies within Kosrae State and is closely associated with the cultural history of the main island.

The island’s principal feature is the archaeological complex of stone-built structures, walls, and platforms made from coral and basalt that form the remains of a fortified settlement. The site is visited for its well-preserved stone architecture and insights into island chiefdoms and settlement patterns.

Lelu Island served as an important local centre in pre-contact times and retains cultural significance for Kosrae. In modern times it is connected to Kosrae by a causeway and is accessible for study and tourism without sea transport.
