Leipsoi
Island Small Dodecanese island with traditional villages
Leipsoi island in the Dodecanese offers sheltered coves, sailing anchorages and taverna seafood; sailors stop for swimming, calm bays and village strolls.
Leipsoi is a small Greek island in the Dodecanese, located in the eastern Aegean Sea between Leros and Patmos. It is a low-rise island with a compact main harbour and a living local community, commonly visited on short island-hopping routes.
The island’s attractions are concentrated around its main port settlement and a handful of nearby beaches and coves. Sandy and pebbled beaches such as Livadi and Platis Gialos are within a few kilometres of the harbour and reachable by short drives or local buses.
Historically Lepsoi shares the modern administrative history of the Dodecanese - it was under Ottoman rule, passed to Italian administration in the early 20th century, and was formally united with Greece with the rest of the Dodecanese in 1948. The island’s economy has long been based on fishing, small-scale agriculture and seasonal tourism.
Leipsoi sits in the eastern Aegean Sea, roughly midway between the larger islands of Leros and Patmos. Regular ferry services connect it with neighbouring islands and the regional ferry network; the island is reached by boat rather than by air.
How to Get to Leipsoi #
Leipsoi (Leipsoi/ Leipsoi) is a small Dodecanese island reached by sea. Regular ferries and local boat connections run from Piraeus (Athens) and from nearer Dodecanese hubs such as Leros, Patmos or Kos - in many cases you transfer at one of those islands.
On arrival at the main port on Leipsoi most accommodations and sights are within a short walk of the quay; the island is small and served by local taxis and limited bus or boat services between coves and villages.
Tips for Visiting Leipsoi #
- Arrive by ferry from nearby islands (Patmos, Leros or Kos connections may be available seasonally) and use the main harbor to reach guesthouses and island taxis - ferry timetables change seasonally so check schedules in advance.
- Visit in shoulder seasons (late spring or early autumn) if you prefer fewer crowds and easier island transfers; peak July-August sees limited ferry space and busier services.
- Explore by small boat or rental to reach quieter coves and neighboring islets - many of Leipsoi's best swimming spots are less accessible from the main port and are much quieter by sea.
Best Time to Visit Leipsoi #
Best in late spring or early autumn for warm weather, fewer crowds and good sea conditions.
