Leicester Castle

Leicester Castle is a medieval castle site in the centre of Leicester, England with origins in the Norman period. It occupies a raised position in the city and retains masonry ruins and a public garden surrounding the core remains.

The most prominent features for visitors are the remnants of the medieval Great Hall and the surrounding Castle Gardens, which provide direct views of the surviving stonework and earthworks. The site is compact and typically visited as part of a longer walk around Leicester’s historic core.

Originally established as a Norman motte-and-bailey and later rebuilt in stone, the castle was adapted over centuries and saw use as a fortress, administrative centre and later for county legal functions. It underwent phases of partial demolition and conversion to civic uses in the post-medieval period.

The castle stands in Leicester city centre close to other historic sites and municipal buildings; it forms part of the medieval core of the city and is accessed from central streets and pedestrian routes.
