How to Get to Leh#
Leh is reached primarily by air via Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) - flights from Delhi are the usual route. There is no rail link; summer road approaches (Manali/Srinagar) are scenic but long and seasonal.
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh (IXL): This is Leh’s airport with regular flights from Delhi (DEL) and some seasonal connections from other Indian cities. Flights are typically about 1.5 hours from Delhi; from the airport to Leh town is a short drive (around 10-20 minutes) - taxis and pre-arranged hotel transfers are standard and inexpensive.
(Other airports): The nearest major international hubs are Delhi and Chandigarh; both require a domestic flight to Leh or a long multi-day road journey (the latter is seasonal and challenging).
Train: There is no rail connection to Leh; the closest mainline railheads are Jammu/Tawi or Chandigarh from where you must travel by road or fly.
Bus / Road: Seasonal overland routes (Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways) operate in summer and are popular with adventure travellers; they are closed in winter. Local buses and shared taxis run within Leh district for nearby valleys and villages.
How to Get Around Leh#
Air travel to Leh (IXL) is the practical standard; overland routes are spectacular but seasonal and time-consuming. Within the region, shared taxis and buses are the norm, while rental vehicles and motorbikes suit experienced travellers.
- Flights (domestic) (INR 4,000-15,000 (one-way, varies widely)) - Regular flights connect Leh with Delhi and other Indian cities; book early, especially in tourist season. Flights are quick (around 1.5 hours from Delhi) but subject to weather and altitude-related delays.
- Shared taxi / Local taxis (INR 200-2,000 (short trips to day tours)) - Shared taxis are a common and economical way to travel to nearby villages and tourist sites; private taxis are convenient for airport transfers or day trips. Agree fares in advance or use meters where available.
- Buses (summer routes) (INR 300-2,000) - Public buses and private coaches operate on seasonal routes and for local commutes; the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh road services operate only in summer and take several days when combining stops. Buses are cheap but slow and subject to weather and road conditions.
- Car rental / Self-drive (INR 1,500-5,000/day) - Hiring a vehicle gives flexibility for local sightseeing and access to remote valleys; high-altitude driving requires experience and acclimatisation. Ensure vehicles are well-maintained and insulated - permits may be required for some routes.
- Motorbike / Bicycle rental (INR 300-1,500/day) - Many travellers rent motorcycles for the high-altitude routes (popular on Manali-Leh) - only for experienced riders. Cycling at altitude is possible but physically demanding and requires acclimatisation.
- Walking - Leh town and the nearby market area are highly walkable; short walks are ideal for acclimatisation. For higher-altitude treks, allow time to acclimatise and consider local guides for safety.
