Main image

Leh Palace is a former royal residence on a hill above the town of Leh in Ladakh, northern India, built in the 17th century. The multi-storey masonry palace is an important local landmark for its scale and its position overlooking the valley.

The palace’s upper floors and terraces offer expansive views across Leh and the Indus valley; the building’s stepped, fortress-like profile recalls similar Tibetan palace architecture. Some interior rooms contain displays of royal artefacts, thangkas and historic furnishings.

Commissioned by the Namgyal dynasty in the 17th century, the palace served as the royal seat before later rulers moved to other residences and parts of the building fell into disuse. It has been the subject of conservation and is managed as a historic monument with visitor access to selected areas.

Leh Palace sits above the town centre of Leh in the union territory of Ladakh, on the slopes overlooking the Indus River plain at high altitude; the town itself lies at roughly 3,500 metres above sea level.

  • Date and style: Constructed in the 17th century as a royal residence, the palace rises to multiple storeys and is visually modelled on Tibetan palaces.
  • Viewing point: Provides one of the best panoramic views across Leh town and the Indus valley, especially at sunrise and sunset.

What to See #

  • Upper palace and terraces: Upper palace levels and terraces provide panoramic viewpoints over Leh town and the Indus valley, with remains of royal apartments on the higher floors.
  • Lower chambers and museum rooms: Lower chambers include former storage and service rooms; sections on the lower floors house displays of local artefacts and period interiors in the palace complex.

How to Get to Leh Palace #

Leh Palace sits on a hill overlooking central Leh town and the main bazaar. If you arrive by air, Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is about a 10-20 minute drive (roughly 6 km) to the town; from the central market area the palace is a short but steep walk uphill (around 10-20 minutes depending on pace). Local taxis and motorized rickshaws can drop you close to the palace entrance.

Tips for Visiting Leh Palace #

  • Plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon for dramatic views across Leh, the Indus Valley and surrounding peaks - the palace terraces are best enjoyed in cooler, quieter hours.
  • Approach from Leh town center rather than attempting a long uphill drive; the palace is a short but steep walk from the main bazaar and taxi stands, so factor in time and go after you're acclimatized to the altitude.
  • Don't attempt the site as a strenuous outing on your first day in Ladakh - Leh sits at high altitude, so allow at least a day or two to acclimatize before climbing up to the palace to avoid breathlessness and dizziness.

Best Time to Visit Leh Palace #

Winter (not recommended for most visitors)
